I too can't wait for the second book. It is unclear to me whether the first line is communicating the passage of time. I think killing the horse would be a bit much...and I do find myself hoping that horse noise is as funny as dog noise. Sorry your friend didn't enjoy the book. The first line obviously shows that the second book does not instantly follow on from book one but shows that some time has passed between the end of book one and the beginning of book 2. I guess that's unavoidable. You can't have all the suspense at the beginning of the story now can you? I seriously don't get why this book isn't more well known as it is, it's so good!!! Although my best friend read it and hated it ... Oh well at least Patrick Ness got some money out of her.
